A Parent’s Guide to First Dental Visits: Making Routine Care Easy for Kids

If you’re a parent in North Tacoma, you already know that introducing your child to new experiences can go one of two ways: smooth sailing or a complete meltdown. A first trip to the dentist often sits near the top of the “will this go smoothly?”
list.
At Dr. Paul Sioda’s practice on Pearl Street, we want every child’s first visit to be relaxed, positive, and even fun. For example, just last month, little Ava came in for her first dental checkup. She was a bit nervous at first, but after exploring the chair and meeting our team, she left smiling and telling her mom how much she liked her shiny, clean teeth. Experiences like Ava’s help set the stage for healthy smiles without any anxiety.
Whether your child just got their first baby tooth or is getting ready for their first real cleaning, here’s a simple guide to make dental visits easy for your family.
1. Start Early (Before There’s Any Problem)
The American Dental Association recommends scheduling a child’s first visit when their first tooth appears, or by their first birthday.
Bringing your child in early isn’t about complicated procedures. It’s about helping them get comfortable. When kids visit the dentist before anything hurts, they learn our office is a safe and friendly place.
2. Keep the Explanation Simple and Upbeat
Kids notice how adults feel more than we think. Try not to use words like “shot,” “drill,” “hurt,” or even “it won’t hurt,” since that can make them worry about pain.
Instead, frame the visit as a quick counting game:
• “We’re going to meet Dr. Sioda and let him count your teeth and brush them with a special shiny toothbrush!”
•. Read a fun children’s book about visiting the dentist a few days before the appointment.
• Play “dentist” at home using a toothbrush and a flashlight to look at each other’s smiles.
3. What to Expect at Dr. Sioda’s Office
We make sure first visits are gentle, low-stress, and move at your child’s pace.
A Gentle Tour: We let them see the chair, touch the fun tools (like the “water squirt” and air dryers), and get comfortable with the room.
The “Lap-to-Lap” Exam: For toddlers, parents can sit right in the chair with their child or hold them comfortably while Dr. Sioda does a quick, gentle check.
Easy Cleanings & Education: We check your child’s development, gently clean any buildup, and share simple tips to help you brush your toddler’s teeth at home. For example, try sitting knee-to-knee with your child and helping them brush while singing their favorite song to make it fun. We also suggest using a “circle, circle, sweep” motion when brushing each tooth—many parents remember this phrase and find it keeps brushing gentle and thorough at home.
4. Convenience for Busy Tacoma Families
With school, sports, and work, managing family healthcare can feel overwhelming.
To help, our Pearl Street team offers back-to-back or family block appointments. You can get everyone’s cleanings done in one visit, so you don’t have to spend your whole morning driving around town. Just let us know you’d like a family block when you call, or ask about it when you book online, and we’ll find a time that fits your family’s schedule.
